Here's Why You Should Switch To
Clean Makeup

Written by: Cathy Calzar

Did you know that the makeup we use such as eyeliners, lipsticks, and foundation are made with different ingredients such as waxes, oils, pigments, and sometimes, with things you’d never want to put on your skin?

In ancient times, Egyptian men and women used black kohl and other powders that include lead salts to beautify their eyes. Women in the Roman Empire and even Queen Elizabeth I of England were known to use lead makeup as foundation. During the Victorian era, Arsenic was already known to be poisonous but that didn’t stop people from taking “Arsenic Complexion Wafers” that promised to remove freckles, pimples, and other facial marks and give that desirable deathly pallor look.

These practices might seem to be a thing of the past but heavy metals and other toxic ingredients still find their way into the modern makeup bag. This raises concerns regarding the safety of the products we use. More people are caring more about what they’re putting on their faces and bodies. That’s why in the recent years, clean makeup has become all the rage.

Here’s why people are switching to clean makeup and why you should switch too!

1. Clean makeup has fewer to no harmful synthetic ingredients

Regular makeup usually contain organic dyes that are typically labelled with ‘FD&C’ or ‘D&C’ ‘in their name. These dyes are synthetically produced from refined petroleum oil or coal-tar derivatives that contain toxic heavy metals. These heavy metals may build up in the body and can cause severe health problems such as cancer, allergies, reproductive and developmental disorders, neurological problems, memory loss, mood swings, muscle disorders, kidney and renal problems, lung damage, hair loss, and many more. Not to mention, these also contribute to early skin aging and unwanted discolorations.

Children who sometimes play with makeup are more at risk due to the fact there is no level of heavy metal exposure considered safe for them.

Clean makeup also avoid the use of synthetic preservatives such as parabens that have been linked to breast cancer. Some clean makeup products also make use of cosmetic-grade talc and talc alternatives such as cornstarch which assures you that the products you’re using are free from asbestos, a known carcinogen.

It’s a good thing that the ASEAN countries are good in regulating the ingredients being put in the products we use. In our country, more than 1000 harmful ingredients are banned from use from cosmetics and some percentage of ingredients are strictly limited in formulations compared in the US where there is little control as to what can be put into the products. For example, in the USA the proposed maximum level of lead to 10ppm (parts per million) in makeup while here the limit is 1ppm.

Beware of counterfeit products that are usually sold cheap and skip FDA regulation. Since these products are illegal, they most probably contain prohibited ingredients.

2. Clean makeup nourishes and cares for your skin

Some clean makeup products don’t just make your skin look beautiful superficially and temporarily. They ensure that your skin will be beautiful underneath all the makeup with the additional ingredients such as plant oils and extracts that moisturize and condition the skin.

Look for ingredients like olive oil, argan oil, shea butter, and the likes. These ingredients are packed with antioxidants and vitamins and will surely nourish your skin.

3. Safe to use even on sensitive skin

Due to its gentle formulation, clean makeup is great for all types of skin especially sensitive ones. They are formulated without the synthetic dyes that can cause contact dermatitis or allergic reactions in some people.

4. They’re more eco-friendly

Regular makeup contain synthetic dyes that produce vibrant and long-lasting colors but are harmful to human health and aquatic life.

Clean makeup makes use of plant-sourced dyes such as beetroot powder, turmeric, and henna and also, mineral pigments like Iron oxides that produce red to brown colors, the white Titanium Oxide, and the shimmering Mica which are all approved by the FDA as safe for use in cosmetics. These cosmetic colorants are way better than synthetic ones since they have little to no impact to the environment throughout their life cycle.
